The memoir helps us to see how hardwon this peace was, given the racism, the opposition from family and society to his sexuality, and the challenges of making it as a Black in the classical and operatic world. In the end, through teaching and through this memoir, Clemmons has turned around to give to others the best of what was entrusted to him.

But Rogers' show also took place during key years in the Civil Rights movement. One subtle way Rogers was able to tell the world that he thought all people were created equal was to invite Officer Clemmons to take a load off and soak his feet with him in a small pool.

I know people who change cars, or get new appliances, or even remodel or move to a new house every several years, and that just doesn't make sense to me. I just hope upcoming generations maintain and improve the 'reduce, reuse, recycle' mindset we were taught. The boomers were such a let down; not great parents and worse grandparents.
